On this episode we’re talking about some common problems you might have with your hot tub and how to troubleshoot them. There are 5 common problems that can take place with your hot tub. If you experience one of these issues, you might be able to troubleshoot it yourself. Otherwise, I highly recommend hiring a professional if you’re unsure or you have to deal with electrical components. My Hot Tub Won’t Heat Sometimes a heating problem is as simple as replacing a heater element, which is the most common cause.

But you should also check the pump to make sure it’s running at a good flow. My Jets Aren’t Working Most hot tubs come with adjustable jets that can be turned down for less pressure, or closed completely. So check first to make sure all your jets are open. If you recently refilled the spa, it could be an air lock. To remove an air lock, loosen either fitting on the pump to allow the air in the pipe to escape.

My friend Dan from has an excellent video on this: 3. My Hot Tub is Displaying an Error Code Flo or FLC = Improper water flow.

The first thing I would do is check the filters to make sure they’re clean or replace them. It could also be a broken pressure switch, which will shut off your heater if you have a low flow. Or it could be the pump itself. OH = Over heat. If the temperature of the water is actually 108° or hotter, the temp sensor should be replaced.

If the water is cool, the high limit sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. Dr/Dry means there’s not enough water in the heater.

This is similar to the Flo error, so make sure your hot tub is properly filled and your filters are clean. If you suspect it something else, hire a professional. COOL means the water is more than 20° F cooler than the temperature set, so just cover your hot tub to let it heat up.

SnA or SnB = This means that sensor A or sensor B is bad or has a poor connection to the circuit board. Check the connection or replace the sensor. If that does not work, the problem is in the circuit board itself. Need more help? Get a comprehensive list of hot tub error codes and what they mean: 4. My Pump is Making Loud Noises This usually means the bearings in the motor are shot, which can be caused by a leaking shaft seal, or old age. The best thing to do is replace just the motor or the whole pump.

Personally, I would just buy a whole new pump rather than replacing or repairing the motor. My GFCI Breaker is Tripping If your breaker keeps tripping, it could be your heater element, pump, blower or ozonator. Find the problem by unplugging each component one at a time and turn the breaker on to see if it trips. If you’ve unplugged all the components and the breaker still trips, it’s probably the heater element.

Today’s bonus tip is brought to you by The Hot Tub Handbook a illustrated downloadable guide covering everything you need to know about hot tub maintenance. Get your copy. Most of the time, hot tub issues are caused by the water chemistry or the filters. So by maintaining a good water balance and keeping your filters clean, you’ll be able to avoid and even fix a lot of these common hot tub issues. Make sure you pH is always between 7.4 and 7.6, your alkalinity is between 80 and 120ppm, and your sanitizer level is correct.

Also be sure to rinse your hot tub filters at least once a week and use a filter cleaner at least once a month. Replacing your filters regularly will help, too.
